It Just Makes Sense
experiencing the world, one sense at a time
3.4.2024
Sight: Today when I pulled in our driveway for lunch, I noticed the willow tree — the same one covered in snow in my last It Just Makes Sense post — is now lightly frosted with tiny green buds.
Sound: Last week was sub-state basketball for high school teams across Kansas. Because our boy’s and girl’s teams were on the top side of the bracket, our school hosted both first round games. After coming away with two wins, fans traveled down the road for the remaining games…would our teams make it through? Excitement buzzed. Each subsequent game seemed to draw a bigger crowd and more intense sound than the last. On the final night, to a standing ovation and cheers, the clock ran out of the girls championship match with my local team winning first place…now they’re state-bound! Congratulations, girls!
Smell: The bathroom at the facility that hosted sub-state basketball always smells like the pool that’s located on the other side of the wall.
Touch: Today my feet touched the track for the first of many times to come during the 2024 middle/high school track season. I was a first-year coach in 2013, bringing with me jittery excitement. You might say I’m “more seasoned” now, but I still get a rush of adrenaline when I first step onto the track, almost as if my body is ready to race like I did way back when.
Taste: My daughter is in a select singing group at her high school that travels around to local churches to perform during services. We’ve had several of these performances recently, and with them often comes potlucks. There are certain dishes — like fluffy Jell-O salad — that seem to appear everywhere. This last Sunday I had both orange and green.

This is a really nice idea. It's good to notice things like this, particularly sensory things that a reader can relate to - these are all things that, when applied to the Fiction space, can really bring your writing to life and add realism. Well done... 😎
I’m not sure anyone on the East Coast makes fluffy jello salad anymore; at least, I haven’t seen any in ages. Now I’m feeling nostalgic.
