a post for thoughts and questions
a series of blurbs about things I’m thinking and/or questions I’m asking

As I read through Exodus1 on my current “read through the Bible in the timeframe it takes” plan, I’ve been struck over and over by the reminder that God cares about the ways His people worship and serve Him. He cares about details and methods, and in turn, I want to as well.
One of my dearest friends lives out of state and the longer we’re separated by the miles, the less we know about the ordinary goings-on of daily life. Yesterday I realized I hadn’t shared an important piece of news and it made me nostalgic for the days when it was easy to get together for something as simple as coffee or a walk. I texted her: “I hate this friendship by text thing (but I’m glad for it too!)” And it’s true. I hate relying on text because I’d much rather live in the same town, but since my wish isn’t reality, I’m very thankful for the option of staying in touch via phone.
As a librarian at a public library, June has been full of Summer Reading Program sessions. I’m leading the teen group, and one thing I’ve tried to do is bring a bunch of theme-oriented book selections to our meetings. So far no one has checked one of those books out, but I don’t see this as a failure. First, it’s helping me, as a newer librarian, get to know the JF/YF section of the library better. Also, even though the kids haven’t checked one of the books out, they DO look at them every week, and in that way, it’s helping them develop an increased awareness of books available to them outside of current trends.
Husband Brad and I celebrated out 20th wedding anniversary at the beginning of June. It’s been hard for me to wrap my head around that number!
Home renovation is something Brad and I have collaborated on since we were engaged. (We picked out a [non-approved] hunter green color to paint Brad’s bedroom in the on-campus house he shared with a bunch of friends during his senior year). Since then we’ve done renovations in five homes including our current 1960s ranch. We’ve learned a lot and grown a lot when it comes to our reno skills and we’re thankful for the process and the progress. Right now we’re working on the basement shower and I’m proud to say, today for the first time, I stood on the cement floor we worked hard on over the weekend. We’re ready for tile, my friends!
Speaking of process and progress, in a recent conversation with two young ladies, I found myself saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know. Don’t feel ashamed about it.” Increasingly I think this is an important lesson, and one I hope others learn earlier than me. If you’re interested in another application of embracing small beginnings, a couple weeks I wrote about how this mentality fits with coaching track…if you haven’t read it yet, you can find it HERE.
What have you been thinking lately?
A New Testament example of this can be found in the Sermon on the Mount as Jesus expands on, and even corrects, current teachings and practices within both the culture and religious community. (Matthew 5-7)

Happy 20th!
Congratulations on your anniversary!
