It Just Makes Sense
Experiencing the world, one sense at a time
One of the ways God created humans to explore the world is through our senses. It Just Makes Sense is a place to share a few recent experiences that have engaged mine:
Sight: As I enter and exit the City building where I work at the library, I walk through a tunnel of butterflies that are drawn to the plants lining the sidewalk. On a smaller scale, I have this same experience at my house in front of the porch. Butterflies are so graceful, and it’s magical to see so many fly around me at once.
Sound: As I’ve started my new job as a library clerk, I’ve been surprised how loud the creak-moan of the exterior book drop’s hinge and the clang of its metal lid is from inside the library.
Smell: My daughter recently traveled to an area Renfest with a high school singing group she’s part of. She and a couple other girls were gifted roses by a stranger (awkward anyone? or just me?). The girls decided to get the roses dipped in wax as a souvenir, which was a fine idea, but when my daughter got home, the scent was so strong, we decided to put it outside in the hopes it would become less intense. In the process, we forgot about it for a few days — during which, highs soared to the mid/upper 90s — and the wax melted. The rose wilted. The rose rotted. And the souvenir had to be tossed. Didn’t think that through very well. Whoops. (#parentingfail)
Touch: Comforting a crying child. I can’t solve the problem (a helpless feeling, to be sure) but my arms are open for hugs.
Taste: “Hey Google. Pick a number between…” Last week I used my Google Home’s random number generator and one of my cookbooks to meal plan. It was surprisingly simple, took away the need for extra brain power (which I lacked), and sent me to new recipes to try. I did have to modify one selection because I couldn’t find a main ingredient, but otherwise it’s been a fun strategy that I will continue to utilize. I have two more recipes to make before I need to start over.
I’d enjoy hearing some ways you’ve recently used your senses, so feel free to let me know in the comments, or, if you subscribe, you can also reply to the email where you received this post.

Sound: I recently became an aunt a year ago on the 17th of this month. When I heard my nephew cry it brought a tear and a smile to my eyes. Now as he gets older he makes me smile with every new thing he is learning to do.
sound: I've recently been enjoying Paper Horses, a new girl band. They have a few singles out and every one has been good.
