A few years ago as extended family gathered to celebrate one of my kids’ birthdays, I had this lightbulb moment where I looked at my husband’s grandma — the only one of our grandparents we have left — and thought, “She’s done all this before.”
It's one of those things that almost feels "no big deal" and yet, now as a track coach, I know better. Back then it was just "normal." Now I can't even sprint 30 yards without being afraid of pulling something.
This is such a beautiful post. You’re right that the passage of time isn’t a novel thought, but you manage to reflect on it in such a winsome way. I think one thing I really like about this post is that you talk about someone breaking your record, and filling your roles, with honor and gladness. I don’t see a trace of bitterness or regret here.
I'm going to admit, your comment made me tear up a little! It's a prayer/desire of mine to grow old gracefully. A couple years before my record was broken, I heard another coach say "records were made to be broken" and I think that helped lay some groundwork and prepare me for the inevitable. Praise God for that!
A 20-year record. That is so cool!

😂 I can't even sprint
Me either...anymore. :D But you run lengthy races and I have what I've dubbed "sprinter's lung" so I'm impeded that way too.

You’re probably right. That was a wise coach.
I am Grandma, only a few short years from great-grandma. Indeed, the time passes quickly.
So quickly! I keep thinking realistically, I could have three married kids in 10 years 🤯
I can’t imagine jumping that far! Go you!
I can't imagine doing it again...the other day I tried to sprint and made it 30 yards before I decided to slow down before I pulled something. HA!
